Nine Pretty Makeup Looks for Date Night

Date night is the time to break out of your usual routine and crank up the romance. Here are the secrets to getting the best flirty makeup looks—with a little celebrity inspiration.
 BORDEAUX LIPS

Let's put it this way: Drawing attention to your lips? Never a bad thing on a date.

This deep wine lip color is just intense enough to be a pretty focal point. To get this kind of precise color that also lasts, start by tracing the natural border of your mouth with a burgundy-colored lip pencil, and use it to fill in the entire lip area. Then, with a lip brush, apply a dark red lipstick such as Dolce & Gabbana The Lipstick in Ultra on top.

 ALL-OVER BRONZE

Rihanna has that all-natural "I-just-roll-out-of-bed-this-gorgeous" look. The secret to re-creating it? Wearing the same glowing makeup color all over the face.

With a fluffy powder brush, lightly dust bronze on the temples, just below the cheekbones, and under the jawline.

"You're keeping the color on the edges but still allowing the high points of the face to come forward," Murphy says.

Dab a touch of blush on the apples of the cheeks, swipe a dark brown eyeliner along the top lash line, and smooth on a gold-flecked neutral lip gloss for your own spin on this effortless look.

CHAMPAGNE SMOKY EYES

Smoky eyes are s3xy but can come across as intense and dramatic. If that's not the message you're sending, try a lighter, softer version.

Line the top and bottom lash lines with black eyeliner, and smudge with a Q-tip or a small pencil brush.

Apply a light brown eye shadow around the outer corners and blend toward the brow bone and under the lower lashes to soften the border.

Dust on a shimmery champagne shadow on the center of the eyelids and "build the color to the edge of the crease," says Murphy.

 CLASSIC SMOKY EYES

You know how we said smoky eyes are dramatic? When you're getting decked out for a major night on the town, nothing less will do.

Copy Julianne Moore's by drawing a black eye pencil—we love how well Elizabeth Arden Smoky Eyes Powder Pencil in Smoky Black smudges—along the upper lashes.

Apply a matte slate or concrete eye shadow just below the lower lashes and on the eyelids, then blend outward to the crease.

"Blur the edges—that gives you that really smoky, diffused look. It starts with the black and just fades into a slate color," says Murphy.

Finish with tons of black mascara. Leave the rest of the face pretty bare—just conceal any spots of redness, and dust on a natural blush and some clear lip balm.

FLUSHED CHEEKS

Flushed cheeks, like Olivia Munn's, are where sweet and s3xy meet. To get the look, "definitely use a cream blush," says Murphy. "It's soft, natural, subtle."

With your ring finger, dot color on the apples of the cheeks and blend back toward the ears.

Murphy recommends rosy pinks for fair skin, corals for fair-to-medium, russet and terra-cotta shades for medium-to-tan, and blushes with hints of plum for darker tones.

Some of our favorite formulas: Maybelline New York Dream Bouncy Blush and Mark Just Pinched Instant Blush Tint.

 PURPLE EYES

When you want a look that's fresh, exciting, and a bit seductive, purple eye shadow fits the bill and flatters a surprising range of skin tones.

To get the look, line the eyes with a black or deep eggplant eye pencil.

Blend a rich aubergine eye shadow into the outer corners and under the bottom lash line. Add "a shimmery mid-tone purple, like a dark lavender, over the lid," says Murphy, and swipe on a bit of black mascara.

 BOLD LIPS

Bright, rich lips, like Solange's here, are romantic and just plain pretty.

To get the look, "tap the color on with your finger," says Murphy. You'll still get that flash of brightness, but "it's going to have softer edges and look more undone."

Brights look amazing on every skin tone, so don't be afraid to experiment.

We love L'OrĂ©al Paris Colour Riche Lipstick in Volcanic  for orange, M.A.C. Matte Lipstick in Russian Red  for fuchsia, Murphy's personal favorite shade.

 ICY METALLIC EYES

Silvery shades on the eyes catch the light for the perfect amount of flirty sparkle.

Rim the eyes with a dark brown or black eyeliner and smudge it with a cotton swab. Then take a cool metallic shadow and apply it to the eyelids and inner corners.

"For this look, you don't want to blend the color up to the brow bone," says Murphy. Keep it to the lids and inner corners only.

"This makes it sophisticated instead of junior high." Murphy also suggests defining the eyes with a brown shadow blended into the outer corners and crease to enhance their shape.

 BOLD LASHES

Long, dark lashes make eyes more defined and bat-able, but the key is to make them look natural, not cartoonish.

To get Eva Longoria's just-right flirty fringe, apply a few individual false lashes to the outer corners of each eye for an almond shape, and to the middle for a doe-eyed look.

Be sure to curl your natural lashes before applying the false ones, and finish with a few coats of mascara to blend the reals and the fakes.
