Mallory Hagan Miss America 2013
Mallory Hytes Hagan (born 1989) is an American beauty
pageant titleholder crowned Miss America 2013 on January 12, 2013. Prior to
holding the title of Miss America, she held the titles of Miss New York 2012,
Miss New York City 2011 and Miss Brooklyn 2010. She follows Bess Myerson
(1945), Tawny Godin (1975), and Vanessa L. Williams (1983) as former Miss New
Yorks to win Miss America.
Hagan is from Opelika, Alabama and is a former student at
Auburn University. Her prior pageant experience includes runner-up placements
in both the Miss Alabama's Outstanding Teen and Miss Alabama competitions. She
moved to the Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn neighborhood in New York City in
October 2008 and won Miss Brooklyn on March 28, 2010.
During the Miss America 2013 competition, she performed a
tap dance routine to James Brown's "Get Up Offa That Thing". At the
time of her Miss America victory, she was 23 years old and a resident of
Brooklyn. Part of her prize package is a $50,000 college scholarship. Her
platform was stopping child sexual abuse. During her final question she
responded to a question about the propriety of having armed guards in grade
schools by saying we should not fight violence with violence.
