While most music videos are merely slick, soulless promotional vehicles for potential hit singles, with no more substance or purpose than a Shamwow infomercial, occasionally a video comes out that transcends crass commercialism and actually stands alone as a work of visual art. Happily, quite a few such artworks hit TV screens and computer monitors for three or so minutes at a time this year, and when we added all those minutes together...well, we realized we spent much of 2011 enjoying some really awesome music videos.
This epic road movie stars ex-Oasis man Noel's real-life friend Russell Brand as some sort of wicked Wonderland mad hatter who lures a golden-haired lass into his dark lair and then forces her to go on a psychedelic trip. The casting is certainly ironic, considering the now-sober Mr. Perry's very well-documented past struggles with drug addiction. But certainly, this is the role Russell was born to play.

Looking like illustrations from the children's classic Alice in Wonderland photographer Igor Siwanowicz brings out the beauty in these little beasts. The creepy crawly-mad nature photographer used a macro lens to get up-close and personal with a host of weird and wonderful-looking wildlife in his latest work. The wildlife expert from Poland says he is on a mission to make people fall in love with these striking creatures, some of which he keeps as pets.
Here a Hed Frog stares down Mr Siwanowicz's camera. The pictures, which bring out the subtle beauty of these creepy beasties, are designed to encourage people to look a little deeper

Karen Kraushaar, a former NRA spokeswoman who lodged a harassment claim against Cain in 1999, filed a complaint two or three years later when she was working as a spokesperson for the Immigration and Naturalization Service, according to the Associated Press. The claim, which did not include a specific sexual harassment complaint, argued that she should have been allowed to work at home after she suffered a serious car accident and also accused a manager of circulating a sexually charged email among staff.
Her lawyer, Joel Bennett, told the AP he wouldn't comment on the complaint because it was handled internally by the INS.
Kraushaar, who now works as a spokeswoman at the Treasury Department, is the second woman to step forward publicly to accuse Cain of sexual harassment, though she has yet to detail exactly what her claims were against the Republican presidential candidate.

Rochelle is on holiday in Portugal with her Saturdays’ bandmate Vanessa White at the moment, and Marv’s using the time to find the perfect ring.
“Marvin’s booked an appointment at Tiffany & Co,” a friend of the star tells this week’s heat magazine. “That’s where he bought her the commitment ring when they got back together.”
But don’t hold your breath for a late summer wedding. “They’ll be going to the Maldives on holiday in the New Year, and that’s when friends think Marvin’s going to propose. They’ve been working really hard, so this will be the first chance they’ve had for a holiday.”
Katie and Peter split last May and were divorced just months later. Add to this the fact that she and Pete are on speaking terms again and Katie is reportedly getting her hopes up in her usual dramatic style.

The Teatro Real of Madrid is offering that opportunity right now with its production of Richard Strauss's one-act tragedy "Elektra," starring the American soprano Christine Goerke in one of the most daunting roles ever written.
Goerke, heard at her third performance of the run on Thursday night, is simply thrilling as the vengeance-obsessed daughter of the slain Agamemnon and his murderous wife, Klytemnestra.
Her supple voice combines a warm, velvety lower and middle register with a shining top that rises easily to high C. Her sound, while not huge, has no difficulty penetrating the 110-piece orchestra — an ensemble so big the theater had to remove the first two rows of seats for this production.
Above all, Goerke brings a vocal bloom to the role that few sopranos today could match. That quality paid off especially in the gorgeous music that follows her recognition of her long-lost brother Orest, a passage she sings with melting tenderness, complete with ravishing, soft high notes.
Her acting, which seemed slightly self-conscious at first, gained strength through the nearly two-hour-long performance until she became completely absorbed in the conflicting emotions of rage, despair and, finally, frenzied jubilation that ends in her death.
